Ripple Effect Study

Water and Development Alliance (WADA) partnered with Ipsos to develop a framework for understanding the many ways improved water, sanitation and hygiene access can impact women, their families and communities. Pathways to Empowerment- termed “Ripple Effects”- were identified, which links clean water to improving reproductive health, increased income, decreased gender-based violence, and reduced risk of water-borne illness.

If you haven’t already, the first step to join the water4Her movement is to take the Pledge, and commit to empowering 100,000 women and girls through clean water access. Review or take the pledge here:

I pledge my support for water4Her, a movement to empower 100,000 East African women to LIVE, LEARN, EARN, LEAD, AND THRIVE THROUGH ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER.

By entering my email below, I commit to join women around the world in taking five key actions that will change lives and transform communities.

  • UNDERSTAND the significance of how lack of clean water access is a key barrier to women’s empowerment and share the urgency of our mission with others.
  • RALLY my family, friends, colleagues, and networks to start a water4Her Giving Team, inviting other women and girls to join the movement.
  • CONTRIBUTE at least $25 to help provide a woman and her family access to clean water.
  • PARTICIPATE in the Hike4Her on Saturday, March 20, 2021, in celebration of World Water Day, to raise awareness for the millions of women and girls who struggle with the daily burden of fetching water.
  • TAKE one additional action from the water4Her Involvement Hub at water4her.org/hub.

*By entering my email above I understand what I am committing to and that I am opting in to receive emails from water4Her organizing partners, The Chris Long Foundation and Global Water Challenge. To learn more, read our privacy policy & terms and conditions.

By taking the water4Her Pledge you have committed to understanding the significance of how lack of clean water access is a key barrier to women’s empowerment and share the urgency of our mission with others.

The amount of time WOMEN & GIRLS SPEND EVERY DAY collecting water that is often unsafe to drink. This is time better spent at school, pursuing economic opportunities, or launching entrepreneurial ventures.

72% of water collection is the RESPONSIBILITY OF WOMEN & GIRLS. Often resulting in harassment or sexual assault when collecting water from remote sources. Accessible clean water improves women’s safety.

Data shows us that access to WATER SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS WOMEN which in turn uplifts communities. By removing the barriers for women’s access to clean water, women and girls are safer, stronger, healthier, educated, employed, and heard.
